Sometimes after the sun falls over the horizon, for just a few more minutes we get the most beautiful colors presented in the sky. The clouds enhance this effect and the winter sky has some amazing pink and orange colors. The vog(volcanic ash) also plays a roll in adding many beautiful colors to our sunsets, making the family portraits naturally gorgeous. There are no enhancements done to this image just a minor density correction, this is truely the color of last nights sunset. Vacation Portraits on Maui

We are quickly approaching the Holidays and this means Maui will be all the buzz.  We are a popular destination vacation resort island with loads of Aloha and Christmas cheer!  No better place to warm your blood than the beautiful Island of Maui.  We get many families at this time of year that are here to celebrate their family holiday.   Sometimes this means family members from afar join together to spend some precious time together.   This makes it a perfect time to capture those family portraits, as well as senior portraits if you have a graduate coming up in 2012.   Family reunions are a bigger reason to capture the memories of the Maui vacation as sometimes it is years before everybody is able to gather together in the same place at the same time.  Maui has both beautiful sunsets as well as beautiful blue mornings that present distant islands and splashing waves, or palm trees and lush tropical foliage to add a touch a beauty to your gorgeous family portrait.   In the winter months we get a lot of beautiful pinks on the horizon or in the clouds as the sun dips over the horizon.  Last night was one of the deepest pinks I’ve seen in a while.  Tomorrows shoot of the Hackett family will hopefully be just as deep pink as last night.  If you are visiting Maui and would like to have your family portraits taken please visit my galleries and consider my services for your family photo shoot.   Mele Kalikimaka  www.saphorephoto.smugmug.com  808-276-1953

Family photos done while vacationing can be the most relaxed and enjoyable activity you can do, and Maui is the place to capture those memories. Polo Beach, Maui Sunset, Family Portrait Photographer

This beach is a popular choice of my clients, Polo Beach fronting the Fairmont Kealani Hotel. This location is nice because we have several choices for backgrounds all in 1 location. Usually a quiet beach, small weddings happen here pretty regularly, but rarely a problem with backgrounds. A few things to keep in mind is the wind does blow on Maui, thats what keeps the humidity down, so be prepared have a back up plan for hair that is worn down, bobby pins or barrets or a hair scrunchie after all we do want to see your beautiful face. Photoshopping is possible for stray hairs, however wads of hair, means rebuilding the part of your face thats under it, not the easiest of tasks. Do not wear liquid/moisture based makeup or sunscreen on the day of the shoot, it will tend to make your skin look greasy as it picks up the reflection of flash and makes big white spots for highlights on your face in the nose and forehead area. If you wear glasses PLEASE bring them with you as people who know you are use to seeing you with your glasses on, if at all possible bring your indoor glasses photo grey lens will turn dark and look like sunglasses due to the flash from the camera. And my last recommendation is to schedule your photography session within 24-72 hrs after arrival on Island, travel can make the eyes look weary and sunburns are impossible to color correct so natural skin tones photograph best. If you are a large group being photoed then neutral colors work best for clothing black, white, blue jean and khaki these usually match even when the hues are different, also makes it easy in coordinating khaki in particular matches no matter what the hue is also photographs very clean. Senior Portrait Pre shoot tips

WHAT TO WEAR
You have a closet full of clothes, but you’re not sure what you should wear for your portrait session. Well,
here are a few ideas that will help you choose the BEST clothes to wear in your Senior Portraits.

Choose a variety of outfits. It’s a good idea to include both casual and formal outfits in your senior portraits.
You choose a few, and let your mom choose a few, that way everyone is happy.

Your face should be the focal point of your portraits. Nuetral solids or very subtle prints are usually the most flattering in portraits.

Khaki and white, blue jean and white are the best, but any variation of blue, black, white, khaki works well
most of the backdrops will add the color vibrant florals, lush green foliage, blue skies and oceans, and various rainbowesque sunsets
Busy patterns and loud colors can be very distracting in your portraits. Avoid large & bold patterns that might tend to draw attention away from your face.
Traditional styles will stand the test of time and keep your portrait looking fresh for years to come.

Some poses will show your feet, so don’t forget to bring appropriate shoes for each outfit that you plan,
but also may be barefoot in the sand on the beach, choose your outfits accordingly

FINAL TIPS:

Simplicity is the key to a successful portrait.

Long sleeve dresses and shirts are recommended.

Coordinate your outfit from head to toe.

Darker clothes minimize body size.

Keep the tonal range of clothing in the same group,
To assure a successful portrait, it is best to bring along several additional clothing choices and let the photographer help you choose.

Don’t forget your jewelry, especially your class ring.

You should wear your hair in your regular style. Guys should NOT have a fresh haircut. If you need a trim, have it done about a week before
your portrait session.

Take exceptional care of your complexion for a week prior to your portrait session. DON”T use alcohol based skin products. Glycerin based
soaps are great for your skin.

Get a good night’s rest, relax and don’t be nervous. Your portrait session is going to be a fun experience!

PROPS CAN HELP to show your personality and record the types of activities you are involved in. Be sure to bring some of your own props to
